A Fifth Grade Class + A Math Unit = A Future

The R Chase Financial story

When Rachelle (Shelli) Chase was growing up, girls became teachers or nurses. Money was something that was left to the guys. In Shelli's own home, her mom didn't write her first check until after her dad's death. Like many immigrant families who came to this country with just pennies in their pockets, Shelli's family saved whatever money they could. However, their financial planning did not go beyond saving. Her dad did not believe in life insurance and definitely did not play the stock market. (Although he followed the stock market and often discussed it at the dinner table.)

For six years after graduating from college, Shelli followed the traditional path and taught school, first as a special education teacher, and then as a fifth grade teacher. It was during her tenure teaching the 10-year-olds that Shelli created a three-month math unit in which the kids were given a salary based on their chosen occupation, a checkbook, and then told to manage their money.

What she didn't anticipate was the breakthrough that it created for the students, their parents, and even herself. The kids enjoyed making their own financial choices with all the inherent risks; the parents were grateful their kids finally understood the value of a buck. And Shelli gained insight into what she wanted to do with the rest of her life.

That three-month math unit taught Shelli two things: she really liked money management, and she liked working one-on-one with students to help them understand what money management was all about and what it meant to work towards financial goals. Ultimately, it taught her it was time for a career change.

Over the next 25 years, Shelli created a career that not only provides people with a one-on-one education about money management, but guides people through the process. The result: Shelli helps her clients follow a plan that aims to help them make sure they have the money they need when they need it.

As a former teacher, Shelli is committed to continuously educating herself. Each year Shelli devotes over 150 hours to continuing education in addition to attending seminars and workshops regarding the economy and investments to make sure she has the views and input from the country's leading economic experts.

Today, she is right where she wants to be. Shelli has deliberately limited the size of her client base in order to guarantee the personal attention she believes her clients deserve. This allows Shelli to take the time to really get to know clients, share in their successes and help them discover that they can create a financial future.
